September, 26th – Neckarbischofsheim, Stadthalle – Agoraphobia, Karkadan, Abstinenz, Skepsis, Licksalt

This is kind of a different live report from me as a musician. First I had to prepare everything because I am the one who is always coping around with the business things of the band like merchandise etc. This was also the first time we went to a gig with my car which has enough space for the equipment stuff – well sometimes it is very headstrong but at least it is big for harbouring all the equipment.

When we arrived at the town hall (which should be renamed to village hall because Neckarbischofsheim is quite small but nice) LICKSALT had already finished their set and SKEPSIS were preparing the stage for the show. I made some shots with my cam (EOS 300D body with the kit zoom lens). Again I am not satisfied but there are some good pictures – I need to get a fast lens for live photography – and maybe a new cam (if this was not so expensive – damn!).

Thrash deathers SKEPSIS had the handicap of a session guitarist who had two or three weeks to learn the songs. But he did a good job although you could hear that there is no perfect harmony and sometimes the songs seemed to break up. But the band tried its best and the vocalist showed his energy. Nice side note is that they had a female guitar player who was like the rest of the band still very young. Guess she will be a very talented musician in the future. The songs were a quite usual mix of death and thrash but at some parts you could see me nodding my had because they grooved. So a nice to see band for sure.

SKEPSIS

SKEPSIS

After a really long changeover ABSTINENZ showed up on stage. They have build up an image of a typical black metal band on stage. The micro stand was a cross turned upside-down with barbed wire (whichs setup took half of the time for the change over except of beer drinking on stage). But no drummer. So they were playing with drums and keyboards from tape. The sound was very undifferentiated but the black metal they played was not too bad although I prefer more sophisticated black metal at the moment. After a guitar string broke they stopped playing asking for someones guitar – too bad because it was already late.

ABSTINENZ

ABSTINENZ

So it was up to us now to enter the stage. The micro stand with barbed wire was still standing there and the singer of ABSTINENZ did not seem to care. Well we did a fast change over like we always use to do – concentrated work – do not keep the last band waiting. Short line up check and go for it! We had decent problems with the sound on stage. No kick on the drum monitor (it was not possible to have it louder) so Hannes was somehow trying to play without hearing what happens on the drums except cymbals. Tommy used his new guitar which is a hybrid for distored and clean sound (with two separate pick ups and electronic ways). He used two amps (one for clean and one for distorted sound). Like expected there were some technical problems with effects etc. I could not hear my voice on the monitors because I had suggested to take it completely away to avoid the feedbacks we had during the line check. So it was really a blind flight. After some songs the bass drum mic went straight off the drum raiser. The drum “carpet” was just a blanket so the whole drum kit was sliding forward and we had to adjust everything from time to time.
To come to a conclusion about our gig I have do say that it was fun dispite of the technical problems and not played too bad if you keep in mind that we only rehearsed one time after the first gig with this line up in June…

Last band of the day were the local heroes AGORAPHOBIA – fortunately they were chosen to be headlineres because they are quite known in this area, although it looked different on the spread flyers. Straight forward old school hardcore combined with (thrash) metal is something you can not call special these days. But AGORAPHOBIA were active for a very long time in the underground so they knew what to do and the people went crazy. I hate violent dancing so it was difficult for me to judge if the crowd was happy or just trying to abreact. Anyway AGORAPHOBIA were filling in the right slot and put up a decent headliner show.

AGORAPHOBIA

AGORAPHOBIA

My guys wanted to leave already so we put everything back in the van. I was happy with this evening but the headache during the drive home was horrible. And today German elections. I almost was too late for using my right to vote…

A special thank you goes off to the two guys driving almost 200 kilometres to this concert just to see us – you rock! There is no better compliment for a band like us!

Daily Update – Agrypnie, SCR news, Metal Nights news, background informations, music recommendations

I am always excited about new technology and I am still amazed about my small (slow but cheap) notebook and that I can write a web blog before going to sleep, listening to music from the server via Wifi. And I was really encouraged to continue writing this blog lately. I even received a new soundcloud track for review today! A lot of people and even bands told me that they read this blog with pleasure and curiosity. I did not expect to have this kind of great feedback shortly after the blog started. Thank you for the warm words!

Did you read the news today? There was a sand storm over Syndey / Australia which made everything look orange like on Mars and you could sometimes even hardly see anything (see this BBC link for more). As I read this news I realized that Torsten – mastermind of AGRYPNIE and ex-NOCTE OBDUCTA singer (both signed to SCR) – is living there at the moment. He told me that when he woke up he first thought that the windows were painted orange… Well, fortunately he also had some good news for me. He revealed the cover art for the next AGRYPNIE album entitled “16[485]” which is about to be released in December 2009. I think this is a really interesting piece of art and something very unique:

AGRYPNIE - 16[485]

AGRYPNIE - 16(485)

If you want to support me, the label or the band feel free to spread this artwork and tell everyone that the new AGRYPNIE album offers cold, atmospheric and sometimes raging post black metal and will hit the stores in December. Feel free to post it in forums, blogs, news – everywhere and refer to Supreme Chaos Records (http://www.s-c-r.de). Thank you for the support!

But there are more band news to add. We are about to sign (well actually everything is already fixed) a solo project from a German producer. I was visiting him in his studio and we talked really a lot about music like we always do – and I really enjoy this. But we also talked about the record which will be finished end of the year and will involve some pretty cool guest musicians. He also showed me the first artwork ideas and promo shoots which look amazing. You can expect a progressive mix of calm and extreme music with both, clean vocals and deep growls. Be sure this is not really that modern music but can be compared to some of the works of pioneers who opened death metal to new progressive influences. Very varied though. We have been talking about this project for almost two years now and I am more excited than ever! I will keep you posted on this.

Being cheered up by the latest success of the METAL NIGHTS event series I designed a logo. It is the letters M and N with horns. Check it out on the MN page and tell me if you like it. Maybe we can do some shirts or stickers of it…
The German Metal Hammer has put up a live report including a gallery for the last Metal Night with Dornenreich. Check it out here (German only!).
But there is no time to rest. So I booked new bands, even for 2010 already. November, 7th, we will set up NIGHT OF DOOM where the headliner BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS will be supported by the local doom heroes MIRROR OF DECEPTION (also the organizer of the infamous DOOM SHALL RISE festival – the biggest doom only festival in the world!) and the local Crowbar-like heavy weight DOOM DIVISION. Be sure that I have another surprise waiting for this event…

To something different – yesterday I found out that the new PARADISE LOST album is streamed on their MySpace page at the moment. So after the great video for the title track I gave it a listen and I must admit that this album sounds interesting at last. I will attend the Paradise Lost show in Stuttgart / Röhre for the awesome guys of GHOST BRIGADE in first instance but now I am curious about Paradise Lost as well.

Right now I am listening to KLONE from France like I did yesterday. What a great band. They are recording a new album at the moment. Be sure to check out their last album “All Seeing Eye” – this is something you should not miss! I feel too bad about really remarkable bands being not noticed. This band deserves your attention if you are into progressive rock or metal or if you just want to discover a band that is really different…

I am off to sleep now wracking my brain about when Thunderbird 3 is about to be finished and if it solves IMAP problems… do not forget to vote and comment! Discuss everything, say how you like the music I suggested!

September, 17th – Stuttgart, Club Zentral – Dornenreich, Ahab, Fjoergyn

After some days of silence I am back with a new report – this report is about an event I organized together with my live crew as part of the METAL NIGHTS concert series. The preparation of this and other events were also the reason for no new updates.

I was really nervous about this day although it must be something like the 50th show I did as organizer. But this time was different – a sold out small venue with a capacity of 300 people as upper limit. I was afraid about the space in the concert room so together with the venue we decided to change the stage to give the poeple more room. It was okay for the bands as well and it should crop up that this decision was right…

When I arrived at the Club Zentral in Stuttgart city centre about 2pm the nightliner of the tour was already parked aside of the building, everything was already unloaded so I welcomed all the people. The funny thing was that I knew most of them.
Of course AHAB can be entitled as quite good friends now (not only because half of the band is signed to Supreme Chaos Records with DEAD EYED SLEEPER) and because Heci was staying at home to await the birth of his son (who saw the light of the world the day before this show b.t.w. – his name is Jonas), Markus – guitarist of my band THE EXORIAL and A&R at Supreme Chaos Records – joined the nautik team as live session member.
Then there were the guys of FJOERGYN who I have not seen for years. With my band KARKADAN I have played with them on the legendary Nightmare Before Summer festival 2006 in Thuringia (before this festival has to call it quits – unfortunately! – one of the best locations you can imagine – an old summer camp in the mountains in East Germany) and I only have seen them once since this time.
And last but not least DORNENREICH with whom I am in close contact since the plans for this tour started beginning of the year. Very nice people. I hope that I can work together with them in the future, again…

As time went by everything was plugged in, built up and prepared. My crew did an awesome job, again!
When the first people arrived I had to realize that the new barcode scanner I have bought does not work as well as the old one (which was stolen) because of different quality of the barcode print outs depending on the printer it was printed with – but the new e-Ticket system was great anyway and we got everything flowing after a while. Hope to get the scanner problem fixed until the Secrets Of The Moon show…

Fjoergyn

FJOERGYN

Speaking of the music… Is there something you can do wrong with a great audience in a packed, nice small club with great sound due to a very good sound engineer? FJOERGYN proved that you can do it even better than just doing a decent job. The audience was really enthusiastic about the music of these charismatic guys who had to concentrate to play their well arranged pagan and folk influenced extreme metal underlayed by a lot of symphonic additions which came from tape. And I have to admit that the guys rocked this evening which was rewarded by the attendees with a great applause and with a rush on their merchandise.

Ahab

AHAB

Now it was time to slooooooooooow down! With sounds of water as intro AHAB entered the stage to spread their nautik mournfulness. You could see fascinated listeners everywhere in the audience. And it surely was a great show they did – pure funeral doom madness. Have to attest a great job to my guitarist as well. Slowly and heavily the fog was flowing on the stage just like the heavy doom riffs out of the PA. The new stuff from the new “The Divinity of Oceans” album and the old songs were harmonizing very well. The higher amount of clean vocals on the new songs were performed almost perfectly. It is always a pleasure to attend an AHAB show.

Dornenreich

DORNENREICH

The headliner of the evening – DORNENREICH – seemed to have an advantage over the other bands judging from the shirts of the visitors. I guess a third of the crowd was wearing a DORNENREICH shirt. And the band knew how to use this advantage. They played a kind of best of set but with some surprises and with a really good sound (better than the last show I attended in Würzburg / Posthallen in March). Their truely loyal fans of course went crazy despite of the temperatures in the club which must have climbed over 40 degrees celsius at this time. Not to mention that the band had to play one extra song.

What an evening. Everything worked out in the end. Fears of the venue being too packed or some other problems turned out to be gratuitous. I am very happy about this success and the bands were too. And like expected they were really crazy about the catering, the club and the atmosphere. I want to say THANK YOU to all the guys in my live crew, to the tour package including sound engineer, light technician, bus driver and everyone who was attending the show!

September, 13th – Karlsruhe, Jubez – God Is An Astronaut, Daturah

Today I picked up some friends to ride to Karlsruhe, again. It was time for GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT – a show I was looking for since weeks. Some friends told me that they would prefer DATURAH but I guess they did not know the main act well enough to judge about them or maybe they were not expecting this kind of eruptive music.

Anyway as we came to the venue it was almost sold out with 300something people so they moved it to the bigger hall of the venue. The stage had a quite low ceiling but was very wide. The bands made the decision easy to buy some merchandise and records – very nice prices (CD = 10 EUR, Shirts = 10 / 12 EUR) – too bad I managed to forget my wallet at home because Droste (from AHAB) called me to ask something about their gig in Stuttgart (they are touring with DORNENREICH) just in the moment I was leaving. Well – shit happens – and it can get even worse – a friend of mine bought the last copy of the “Far From Refuge” vinyl version from GIAA…

So let us turn over to better things: the shows of two great bands. DATURAH started with three guitars, bass and drums, screening pictures in vintage look. One guitarist played the keyboards at some parts. The result was an overwhelming intense sound with very explosive moments emerging from synthetic intros. They played a very tight set and most of the crowd was nodding with the rythm. Convincing me with a really representative cross-section of their releases DATURAH put a lot of emotions in their songs and a decent level of honesty so you could simply not resist their music.

Speaking of honesty – I did not know what to expect from GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT as some songs are really soft in the recorded version. But fortunately the guys had the courage to put up a really heavy set which was hightlighted by deeply unsettling videos of atmoic bomb detonations, spacecraft take-offs, caged animals, screaming people or praying priests. It was amazing to see and hear that a three piece constisting of drums, bass and guitar can bring up a dense wall of sound like this. Calm parts followed by eruptive heavy guitar parts getting to a climax. The precise drums were one part of it but the diversified guitar work was what made all the people dive into an own world of sound. And believe me – noone on this concert would disagree with this point. Sometimes I believed that I could even feel myself flying through the space. Just one word left: adorable music! Not to forget a very down-to-earth band with likeable announcements.

After the show everyone was trying to get some merch or some records … well … except me of course.

Yasmine Tourist – The Blue Moon EP

My friends from YASMINE TOURIST have sent me three tracks which are taken from “The Blue Moon” EP which will be uploaded on MySpace as final version on Monday, September 14th. I know these guys since my school days, especially mastermind Dominik Gerwald, so it was a pleasure to write something about their new songs. The version I had a chance to listen to is still the unmastered version. But anyway it sounds almost perfect due to Johnny Park from Submarien who was acting as recording engineer.

The first track is the title track “Blue Moon” with a very positive attitude – just guitars, voice and brushes. This is an approach to country music which I did not expect but without loosing the alternative music basis. The lyrics are very encouraging, the steel guitars give the feeling of freedom. To the end the song is somehow getting to a climax. First there are hardly drums but in the end there is a groovy and driving rythm and a piano / steel guitar solo with a typical country ending. “Pour yourself” is quite different with a very unique vocal line which is emphasized by a piano from time to time. Yearning lyrics are expressed by the music – again becoming more and more heavy with even electric guitars at the end and uprising vocals. But this time the song has a kind of break which ends in a great guitar solo before the song tranquilly dies away. The last song with the amazing title “Neon coloured” is spreading a melancholic mood with just a little percussion in the back. This could be a soundtrack to a Tarantino movie. I can see a man walking a road – lonely but still with strength. Again, the song is escalating. After a calm break which is making room for sentimental vocals, kettledrums are dominating over underlaying ambient synthesizers and voices whispering in the background. Crescendo – and it is over…

Conclusion: A unique alternative / songwriter band is coming the way with really outstanding piano parts, steel guitars and some unique vocal lines. So if you are interested in quite unconventional alternative music you should check out their MySpace page on Monday.

I will put up another review fom this genre the next week – FLORIAN OSTERTAGs “The Constant Search” (Jens from Maria Records was nice enough to send it to me the last days).

September, 10th – Stuttgart, Zwölfzehn – IRA, Liquid Broom

Third time is a charm. Finally I had the possibility to see IRA live. It was really nice to go there after work (first usual work then mailorder work), first have a nice chat with some friends in front of the club in a warm night in late summer. A really relaxing atmosphere and a small club with a very personal setting.

LIQUID BROOM opened up. The band lately evolved from parts of the local scene. You could describe the music as typical nowadays post rock mixed with some electronic parts and a few straight-forward rock parts. Playing with a decent sound, the band often trys to sound “very post rock” but these moments are not what makes this band special. Their particularly strong moments are the erupting parts when the guitars are playing a doubled melody, but also the calm electronic moments. Maybe the band should try to combine these parts even more with their post rock sound. Anyways, painted with uv color which was emphasized by black light, they did a great show which made me dream at some points. They finished off after approx. 50 minutes when I wanted to escape the stuffy concert room for some minutes. But I will see them again for sure…

After a short gasp for breath IRA started with their set which consisted mainly of songs from their upcoming album “Visions of a Landscape” which are a bit wind down compared to older material. The sound was brilliant. If only other post rock based bands would use vocals like IRA but this is surely something that makes them very unique. Singer Tobias did a great job this night singing very emotional and nevertheless musically correct. The rest of the band did a great job as well transporting all sorrow, from time to time exploding in anger. With only six songs, each of them lasting almost 10 minutes, they built up a very own sound scape with great harmonies. I could not resist closing my eyes from time to time and simply savor the pictures the band was drawing with their songs. The sometimes very heavy guitars are often dubbed with a fragile lead melody, be it by the vocals or by one of the guitars. This was simply electrifying. After the song entitled “encore” which you can also see as live video on their MySpace site the band left the stage but came back for what this title stands for – an encore. So they played “Long live the parts”, an older song which was very very heavy in the live version. This was a felicitous finish for a great gig! I will surely come to your next show when you are around, guys…

New live events, Updates about SCR, more

This is not only a blog which is about music – it is more about the extreme music experience in my daily life. And there are always things to write about because I have to deal every day with a huge amount of different artists, music and everything that goes along.

I wanted to put up the OPETH interview on tuesday but failed. Integrating an eBay interface into the shop system was not easy but then something went really, really wrong. I actually can’t even tell what happened. But suddenly there was only one item (DAMNABLE‘s Completely Devoted CD) all over the shop – about 35’000 times. It was meant to be updated with a price of 3.90 Euros but updated the whole database. So I had to restore the database this evening and to prepare for similar scenarios. I put up a new backup system for the web database (for those who are interested – the shop runs on a MySQL 5 database and is now backed up with MySQL Dumper, the backup is downloaded the same night to my local server). Unfortunately half of the items were still in the shop for 3.90 Euro after restoring the title etc. information. So I had to update all the date and the shop went back to normal status early in the morning (I had some hours of sleep – the update took some hours, but had to check something in the mid of the night). This is the reason why there is still no OPETH interview on the blog. I will add it the next days – be sure!

Today I was busy with a lot of other shit but also talked to some nice people which resulted in booking BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS (post hardcore / funeral doom) for the NIGHT OF DOOM – finally, and fixing a date for CHEENO (alternative rock / metal) together with NOCH NE BAND (alternative rock) in January 2010. And with the singer of BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS I am still trying to organize another live event – so be prepared for some news about this.
Also Stefan of GRAVEART gave me an idea about what the MySpace page of SCR will look like in the future. We started a collaboration and are now working on this as our first project we do together – and it will be great! You will hear of that guy in the future…

An old friend of mine, Dominik, just gave me some new tracks of YASMINE TOURIST for a listen. I think a will post a short review about these tracks on Friday…

Tomorrow I will be at the ZWÖLFZEHN in Stuttgart to check out IRA and LIQUID BROOM. Markus (A&R of SCR) was enthusiastic about IRAs live performance earlier this year so I am really excited about seeing them live, finally! I know the guys from LIQUID BROOM from different bands with totally different music. Of course I will report from this evening filled with finest art / alternative / post rock…

September, 4th – Karlsruhe, Stadtmitte – Tephra, Antitainment, Tragic Vision, Tom Mess

After a busy day which also included adding some new features to the blog, I went straight to a concert in Karlsruhe with some friends.

After meeting some other friends in front of the club we were too late for the first act – singer and songwriter TOM MESS which is sad because I wanted to see this guy. He seems to be very sympathic and “real”. Next time maybe.

When we came in, TRAGIC VISION were playing. First I was not sure about them. Their music can be described as indie rock with deep punkt influences. They did a good job although some of the songs were a bit uninspiring, but the audience like it and so did I. If you are into alternative / indie rock music and maybe also into punk you should check out their MySpace site.

We were standing outside of the “Stadtmitte” club in the really beautiful and atmospheric beer garden drinking some beers (not for me – I was the driver and of course only drank … a light beer). First we were not sure if TEPHRA already started but as it was clear we immediately went into the club to see the band we were there for.

So it was TEPHRA playing and already building up noisy guitar walls with screaming vocals and – surprise – TWO drummers. Yes, it is true. TEPHRA have two drummers at the moment and they were playing simultanously and really, really tight. I know that they had not enoguh time before this gig to work out something different than the two drummers playing the same stuff – they will do that in the future. It was amazing to see these two drummers having fun, moreover cheering each others up and at the same time playing the same notes really precisely.
The bands raging post rock / hardcore was performed with a deep passion which resulted in one guitar player having troubles with his cables. A break, technical problems like this is something that you can not do anything about but solve them. Finally – the band played some more heavy stuff with 100% of their engery which was intoxicating and simply amazing me. Drawing pictures with music despite of a static bright stage light is what I call art.

After TEPHRA we were heading for the beer garden again. Of course we wanted to check out the headliner, ANTITAINMENT. But their weired electronic-metalcore-whateve-mix was nothing I could bear for a long time. So back in the beer garde. After some more funny discussions and buying a tee, I met the TEPHRA guys and we talked about a possible show in Stuttgart for the next year. It will be a release show and I cannot reveal any details about what is going to be released – it will be a surprise – be sure…

It was a very relaxing evening with some really nice friends and a very cool band – TEPHRA – both, musically and personally…

P.S.: The new blog features include a live last.fm ticker so you can see all the stuff I am listening to and maybe check it out via last.fm.

First SoundCloud track review: TOROGDIL – Furchtgewandt

As promised this is the first on-the-fly review in history. TOROGDIL sent me a track entitled “Furchtgewandt” which is home recorded and produced. It is from their upcoming album.
After an epic and heavy guitar intro with a very heavy guitar sound the song starts raging. As expected from the guitar sound it can be described as harsh black metal with a lot of death metal influences. Unfortunately the drums are from a drum machine – I would have loved to hear this song with a real drummer. The vocals are a mixture of whispering and traditional black metal vocals presenting us German vocals. If I was to tell you a similar band I would say DORNENREICH and CREATURE. It is a lot faster and darker than you might expect from DORNENREICH and in a way more epic than you might expect from CREATURE.
The song is quite varied although the same theme is reapeated very often in some parts over a playtime of almost 6:30 minutes. My conclusion is that you can hear very nice songwriting ideas in this demo song and the band is definitively trying to be different from other bands. But as you can expect from a young band this song is not as mature as it should be for a real album release – in my opinion and with my high expectations for new music. BUT I definitively would like to hear this band live and “feel” their sound not as sterile as on this recording – not to mention of a real drummer…

P.S.: You can rate now yourself using the rating feature on the top of the post…

Opeth interview, new music, eBay stress etc.

Short night, new day.

I have posted yesterday that you can send me your tracks for a possible review and had one track in my mailbox immediatly. I will put the review online later that day but I have already listened to it several times. So keep up sending me your music, new suggestions are always welcome and I guess the people out there want to discover new music as well. No limits. Extreme metal, hardrock or even jazz… Everything is welcome!

At the moment we are sorting out bands and we have several bands in our focus which we want to sign to either SUPREME CHAOS RECORDS or PREVISION MUSIC. Be sure – very interesting bands, nice guys and awesome live appearances. I hope we can give you some more informations in the near future – and you can discover some more interesting music.
Also I have booked new artists for the METAL NIGHTS, some good old Swedish friends as well as very old school stuff. But this is already for 2010 and cannot be revealed, yet.

Tomorrow I will be attending a post rock / hardcore / metal concert with the great TEPHRA in Karlsruhe / Sadtmitte. Also on stage: ANTITAINMENT, TOM MESS and TRAGIC VISION. Of course I will put up a live review shortly after I am back home.

You may now be asking – what was about OPETH in the headline? Well I recently found an old interview with Peter / Mikael from OPETH on my harddisc which I did back in December 2005 on the Ghost Reveries tour for Powermetal.de. There are some really interesting questions and answers. I will put up that interview the next day in this blog…

As there was a lot of Swedish death metal in this post today I have to post one track from a very cutting-edge band called EDGE OF SANITY. It has a very catchy chorus with an outstanding vocal line and it actually is a cover version from Dan Swanös “new band” NIGHTINGALE. Check it out here:

This is also a little hint for several activities going on in the back at the moment. Besides of dealing with eBays API insanity. They are changing all the attributes and – BAM – just some months later your eBay integration code does not work anymore. That is where I left my night – thank you eBay …
