November, 5th – Karlsruhe, Substage – Amorphis, Before The Dawn, Amoral

Today there was need to be at the venue in time. I was teaming up with the guys from Cyclone Empire (my distribution partner and also the label of BEFORE THE DAWN) for some exchange of goods and to just have a beer.

You might now the opener AMORAL from their first albums playing progressive sounding death metal. Well – no death metal anymore – they recently have changed the singer who now concentrates on classic heavy metal vocals. So a totally different sound from the same band. Funny thing was the floor fan for the singer which made his hair float during the whole show. The music itself was nice though but nothing more and not as special as before. Music-wise it did not fit into the billing to be honest.

Of course we were looking forward to the show of BEFORE THE DAWN from Finland. In a fully crowded location with approx. 600 people they fulfilled our expectations. Good show with a lot of energy and you could see that these guys have fun sharing stage with each others. Anyway the sound was not good in all positions of the room. So I could only enjoy the last part of the show after finding the right place with good sound. A good combination between clean vocals, melodies and more heavy parts with growls was for sure a good warm up for a band like AMORPHIS.

I guess everyone already knows what you can expect from AMORPHIS after they have changed the singer. The new singer Tomi Joutsen has an awesome vocal range including the deepest growls and the best clean vocals you could expect from a live show. Main focus was the new album “Skyforger” but also other new albums like “Eclipse” were given a lot of attention. “Stone Woman” and the sorts of course could convince with great vocals. Like I use to say – Tomi is one of the best live singers of our time. Although the whole band seemed to be a bit tired from touring (this show was at the end of the tour), not a single note is wrong, perfect time – this is almost inhuman. And AMORPHIS actually live from their front man these days. After more than an hour the band closed the evening with an encore which of course included “Tales from the thousand lakes”. After all this time this song is still really, really big.

An all over all very nice evening with nice bands including a short interruption for a web cam foto of me and Hage (Cyclone Empire) at the Ettlinger Tor (the web cam is mounted at one building that surrounds this place and only shoots a picture every 70 minutes – so timing was very important and my colleague saved the picture at home). The AMORPHIS show was not as surprising as the first shows with the new singer anymore but very solid and still very powerful. BEFORE THE DAWN did a good job and AMORAL was nice to see but not a must-have…

December, 12th – Lengerich, Gempt Halle – Satans Convention with Arch Enemy, Destruction, Taake, God Dethroned, Deströyer 666, Unlight, Abigail Williams, Triosphere

My decision to go to the so called SATANS CONVENTION (what a stupid name by the way) was based on the fact that I would reside in Lengerich this weekend anyway.

First shock was the fact that SIX FEET UNDER had cancelled the show. This alone would have been no issue for me because it was in no means one of the bands I wanted to see. But to to me this is a reason to lower the ticket prices. To still ask for 35 Euros for a show where the headliner is missing is a rip-off in my opinion. Including the fact that the

Unfortunately we missed the first three bands TRIOSPHERE, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS and UNLIGHT. But we met our friends from UNLIGHT later who were of course absolutely surprised about my appearance on this festival. Concerning other reports TRIOSPHERE managed to do quite well but did not fit in the billing with their sophisticated power metal music. ABIGAIL WILLIAMS seemed to be a matter of taste. UNLIGHT were claimed to be the best black metal band this evening.

We were quite in time to see the start of DESTRÖYER 666, a band which I wanted to see for ages but always missed. The black thrash mix of the Australian band surely met my taste. To be honest I had expected a bit more stage action from this four piece. Quite nice show and maybe the first highlight for me this evening although I had expected a bit more power.

DESTROYER 666

I have seen GOD DETHRONED already several times and last time was in October with Endstille, Hollenthon and others. As far as I can recall they never had a weak show so far and this should not change on Satans Convention as well. Again, female guitarist Susan was eye candy. But of course a metal show is about the music. GOD DETHRONED covered almost all of their albums and played a powerful set.

GOD DETHRONED

TAAKE singer Hoechst was still in my mind with his misbehaviour the last time TAAKE played in Essen. Showing up with a Swastika on your breast in Germany is not even rudimentary funny. This time he seemed to concentrate on the music instead. But rumors spread that he had made some strange statements in the backstage area which resulted in a close fight which Hoest lost against Schmier from DESTRUCTION. Maybe TAAKE should think about the quality of their performance instead of wasting time with bullshit… this was for sure the worst performance this evening.

Thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION was a pleasure for my ears after the black metal vacuum cleaner (and do not take me wrong – I like black metal and even like the TAAKE recordings). Hell yeah what a power. I have not seen a strong performance of them for a long time. Maybe it was more powerful this evening than ever before. The audience seemed to agree as there was a circle pit and a lot of headbanging, in one word – enthusiastic responses. And DESTRUCTION enjoyed this show as well. Well done – winner of the evening!

A huge task for ARCH ENEMY to cheer the people up again after this intoxicating thrash metal set. Of course I expected a lot from the guitar front as ARCH ENEMY have two great talented guitar players in their line up. Maybe Michael Amott might be little bit more known due to his work with CARCASS but his younger brother Christopher is a bit more varied and plays insane lead stuff. It is always a blast to see this guy play. Turning up the volume for the (renewed) headliner is a common thing to do but if this leads to a bad sound it might be something you should NOT do. Unfortunately the second case happened to come true this evening. Being really tired and being not able to hear the sole guitar sounds from the mush of sounds made us leave the venue after 3 songs from ARCH ENEMY.

So we went home in an icy winter night with approx. minus 15 degrees Celsius with both, good and bad memories in our mind.

October, 24th – Stuttgart, Jugendhaus Anna – Nuclear Warfare, Legion of Fate, Frames of Mind

Well actually no real live report but a kind of short side note about a small concert.

On Saturday I wanted to have a relaxing evening but somehow a friend of mine send me a text message that there is a small concert and if I would like to join them. As the venue is just 10 minutes away from my apartment I decided to leave. As expected there were only 20 or 30 people visiting the concert. I missed FRAMES OF MIND. It was just too spontaneous. Would have been funny to see them again after we have shared the stage with them one week before.

So I joined LEGION OF FATE and saw a very nice band playing a mix of death and thrash metal. This was just the style I remembered of our gig together with them. A little bit more talking with friends and the organizer / local social education worker of the youth centre. He is the singer of PSYCHOTRON, a local thrash metal act. We were talking about the future for this youth centre because the city is planning to demolish it and build a new one at a different place.

NUCLEAR WARFARE play old school thrash in the vein of old Sodom and the sorts. Apparently nothing new. Funny to watch though. So I had a good time with friends and maybe will contribute some vocals for their next album – who knows. My favourite was of course “Dosenpfand”, a song complaining about the deposit for (beer) cans. Naturally I was enjoying the free beer as well.

After this short concert interruption of the evening I went to the park, having a walk finding some geocaches. A nice one was a lost place: an old mini golf court. Reminded me of the virtual mini golf matches I have played this day. Eventually I really liked the fresh air and the calm park in the midst of the night…

October, 25th – Ludwigsburg, Rockfabrik – Cannbial Corpse, Dying Fetus, Evocation, Obscura

I know that it has been silent for some days again. First I was replacing the server with the NAS which finally arrived Tuesday customizing the whole piece which took about two days. Then surprisingly the power supply fucked up as I wanted to switch over to the UPS. I was so happy before this happened, upgraded the whole net to gigabit LAN.

But let us get back to the music. I want to report about the last shows I attended and will start with the latest which was today. I really had a full schedule these days and it will not stop until Tuesday.

Today it was time to get some old school feeling back into my mind. Why old school? There has not been a big death metal show in the good old Rockfabrik for ages! And it was Cannibal Corpse which I saw there about 10 years ago. Of course some of the old metal heads showed up…

Arriving a bit too late because OBSCURA started quite early at 7 pm I got at least the chance to see some of their songs. I had the Summer Breeze show in mind where the sound was a bit fucked up in my opinion. Maybe it was also because of the fact that a band like OBSCURA is made to play in clubs. Today the sound was better although the guitars were very quiet and hardly to hear sometimes. Anyway it was a pleasure to see them playing mostly songs from their latest output “Cosmogenesis” with a lot of joy and with a technical level of their own (although singer/guitarist Steffen later told me that everyone in the band was about to get really sick). This was a great start for an evening with four very different death metal outfits.

2009 was a great year for Swedish deathers EVOCATION so they had the chance to join this tour as well. To be honest I only saw one song because I have seen the bands so many times the last months that I was not really curious about the show. Additionally the sound today was really weak – no power at all – so I preferred to talk to some friends and have a beer instead. I also met EVOCATION singer Thomas and he was somehow confirming that this was a bad day sound-wise. We met in a quite funny situation. I was talking with some guys from their label Cyclone Empire with whom I work together very closely,  and Thomas seemed to remember me from some extreme festival boozing sessions which I obviously can hardly recall… a really a nice guy – if you are around and see these guys – have a beer with them!

How long was I waiting for this to happen? Back in the times when I used to work as DJ in the Rockfabrik (which must be more than 10 years ago) I have listened a lot to DYING FETUS and now I finally got the possibility to see them live. A friend of mine was later asking how anyone could like this music. I have not found any decent answer. They just kicked my ass like hell! Having in mind their “Destroy the Opposition”, “Killing on Adrenaline” records and the “Grotesque Impalement” EP they just left me without any wishes. I had to go really crazy on them. Bass player Sean Beasely looked like a beast holding a full scale bass guitar which looked like a toy in his hands. He shared the vocals with guitar player John and Tray showed up from time to time behind his drums to cheer up the crowd. Their precisely played high speed death grind resulted in the first circle pit of the evening, some crowd surfers were flying off the stage and the people went mad. Great live band – finally I got the proof that I missed something – nothing to add!

Rockfabrik and CANNIBAL CORPSE have something like a long-term relationship. Seems like they like to play in this venue. As I guessed from the CORPSE shirts every second attendee was wearing everyone was waiting for the real headliners. Maybe I have seen them live too often, maybe I should have listened a lot more to the last albums, but I  simply cannot say more than that it was a good show with a moderate sound. But it was also nothing less. The venue was really crowded and the people really enjoyed the headliners of this evening. After all those years some songs being censored CANNIBAL CORPSE could perform titles like “Hammer smashed face” or “Fucked with a knife” which was of corpse dedicated to all the women out there.

As conclusion I can state that this was a very nice death metal evening with 4 killer bands, maybe the perfect mix of different styles. I have to add that the audience was really great and caring this day which I miss on some concerts with extreme music these days…

I will keep you posted with new goodies and reports every day of this week and try to get some pictures for the reports – promise!

October, 10th – Stuttgart, Club Zentral – Centaurus-A, Deadborn, Embedded, Subconscious

Upfront of organizing this show I already knew that this would be something for progressive death metal enthusiasts only. Addressing a small and very unique crowd has never been simple but we did our best in the fields of promotion due to a bunch of helpers. Anyway I wanted to do this show because I adore the precision and musical virtuosity (if you can say so for musicians playing brutal death metal) of the bands that were scheduled.

The advance sales were quite low and there were only approx. 40 people attending the shows of this amazing package. All the ones who stayed at home this rainy day have missed an event with a really familiar atmosphere and bands that were playing death metal over the top – every single one with its very own approach.

As SUBCONSCIOUS entered the stage there were only few people in front of the stage but it seems like everyone enjoyed the progressive death / thrash mix which is always described with its propinquity to Chuck Schuldiners DEATH which is not only based on the vocals which have the typical throaty sound but also results from the quite similar approach to death metal by using very complex patterns and incredible guitars sweeping solos. Rainer on bass guitar was once again playing in an own world. A lot of people compare him to Steve DiGiorgio but I know that he has never heard this name before nor did he even knew bands like DEATH, MESHUGGAH or ATHEIST before he joined SUBCONSCIOUS. The band decided to put some new songs on the set list which made the show a lot more interesting for me because I have seen them for more than a dozen time and also because this might be possible songs for an upcoming album which would probably again be released on my label Supreme Chaos Records which is dedicated to progressive extreme music anyway. The last two albums were released there – so be sure to check this band out if you are into DEATH or similar.

SUBCONSCIOUS

SUBCONSCIOUS

From Southern Germany to Osnabrück where EMBEDDED are coming from. I have heard several tracks of their new record “Beyond the Flesh” released on DB Agency earlier this year. They play very down to earth death metal with a kind of old school attitude but still with enough technical finesse to fit into this billing. And so was their live show – very strong and straight forward. You could see the first people moving around. EMBEDDED put up a decent death metal show and went at full tilt.

EMBEDDED

EMBEDDED

Some of the attendees were waiting for DEADBORN to show up on stage and so they did. Technically on a high level they fired a broadside of brutal death metal with just one guitar. And they did a hell of a job showing up with a very powerful stage presence. I knew this local band for some years and have never seen them live paying full attention before. So they blew me right to the wall. If you have the possibility be sure to check out one of their next shows!

DEADBORN

DEADBORN

I was really curious about how CENTAURUS-A would transpose their very complex and highly progressive songs onto a club stage. After the show I was sure that the guitar players of CENTAURUS-A must be in league with the devil. It was simply insane what this band showed on stage and it is also sad that this band does not get more attention! Instead there are bands like NECROPHAGIST and OBSCURA take all the credit for highly progressive death metal from Germany (which they deserve for sure but other bands do as well). CENTAURUS-A means guitar licks beyond the speed of light combined with pure drumming complexity and under-laid by cool bass lines. You could either just watch these guys playing with your jaw hitting the ground or go totally crazy…

CENTAURUS-A

CENTAURUS-A

Four amazing bands, nice people – both on and in front of the stage -, a great concert crew made an unforgettable evening with top-notch death metal – period!

September, 26th – Neckarbischofsheim, Stadthalle – Agoraphobia, Karkadan, Abstinenz, Skepsis, Licksalt

This is kind of a different live report from me as a musician. First I had to prepare everything because I am the one who is always coping around with the business things of the band like merchandise etc. This was also the first time we went to a gig with my car which has enough space for the equipment stuff – well sometimes it is very headstrong but at least it is big for harbouring all the equipment.

When we arrived at the town hall (which should be renamed to village hall because Neckarbischofsheim is quite small but nice) LICKSALT had already finished their set and SKEPSIS were preparing the stage for the show. I made some shots with my cam (EOS 300D body with the kit zoom lens). Again I am not satisfied but there are some good pictures – I need to get a fast lens for live photography – and maybe a new cam (if this was not so expensive – damn!).

Thrash deathers SKEPSIS had the handicap of a session guitarist who had two or three weeks to learn the songs. But he did a good job although you could hear that there is no perfect harmony and sometimes the songs seemed to break up. But the band tried its best and the vocalist showed his energy. Nice side note is that they had a female guitar player who was like the rest of the band still very young. Guess she will be a very talented musician in the future. The songs were a quite usual mix of death and thrash but at some parts you could see me nodding my had because they grooved. So a nice to see band for sure.

SKEPSIS

SKEPSIS

After a really long changeover ABSTINENZ showed up on stage. They have build up an image of a typical black metal band on stage. The micro stand was a cross turned upside-down with barbed wire (whichs setup took half of the time for the change over except of beer drinking on stage). But no drummer. So they were playing with drums and keyboards from tape. The sound was very undifferentiated but the black metal they played was not too bad although I prefer more sophisticated black metal at the moment. After a guitar string broke they stopped playing asking for someones guitar – too bad because it was already late.

ABSTINENZ

ABSTINENZ

So it was up to us now to enter the stage. The micro stand with barbed wire was still standing there and the singer of ABSTINENZ did not seem to care. Well we did a fast change over like we always use to do – concentrated work – do not keep the last band waiting. Short line up check and go for it! We had decent problems with the sound on stage. No kick on the drum monitor (it was not possible to have it louder) so Hannes was somehow trying to play without hearing what happens on the drums except cymbals. Tommy used his new guitar which is a hybrid for distored and clean sound (with two separate pick ups and electronic ways). He used two amps (one for clean and one for distorted sound). Like expected there were some technical problems with effects etc. I could not hear my voice on the monitors because I had suggested to take it completely away to avoid the feedbacks we had during the line check. So it was really a blind flight. After some songs the bass drum mic went straight off the drum raiser. The drum “carpet” was just a blanket so the whole drum kit was sliding forward and we had to adjust everything from time to time.
To come to a conclusion about our gig I have do say that it was fun dispite of the technical problems and not played too bad if you keep in mind that we only rehearsed one time after the first gig with this line up in June…

Last band of the day were the local heroes AGORAPHOBIA – fortunately they were chosen to be headlineres because they are quite known in this area, although it looked different on the spread flyers. Straight forward old school hardcore combined with (thrash) metal is something you can not call special these days. But AGORAPHOBIA were active for a very long time in the underground so they knew what to do and the people went crazy. I hate violent dancing so it was difficult for me to judge if the crowd was happy or just trying to abreact. Anyway AGORAPHOBIA were filling in the right slot and put up a decent headliner show.

AGORAPHOBIA

AGORAPHOBIA

My guys wanted to leave already so we put everything back in the van. I was happy with this evening but the headache during the drive home was horrible. And today German elections. I almost was too late for using my right to vote…

A special thank you goes off to the two guys driving almost 200 kilometres to this concert just to see us – you rock! There is no better compliment for a band like us!

Daily Update – Agrypnie, SCR news, Metal Nights news, background informations, music recommendations

I am always excited about new technology and I am still amazed about my small (slow but cheap) notebook and that I can write a web blog before going to sleep, listening to music from the server via Wifi. And I was really encouraged to continue writing this blog lately. I even received a new soundcloud track for review today! A lot of people and even bands told me that they read this blog with pleasure and curiosity. I did not expect to have this kind of great feedback shortly after the blog started. Thank you for the warm words!

Did you read the news today? There was a sand storm over Syndey / Australia which made everything look orange like on Mars and you could sometimes even hardly see anything (see this BBC link for more). As I read this news I realized that Torsten – mastermind of AGRYPNIE and ex-NOCTE OBDUCTA singer (both signed to SCR) – is living there at the moment. He told me that when he woke up he first thought that the windows were painted orange… Well, fortunately he also had some good news for me. He revealed the cover art for the next AGRYPNIE album entitled “16[485]” which is about to be released in December 2009. I think this is a really interesting piece of art and something very unique:

AGRYPNIE - 16[485]

AGRYPNIE - 16(485)

If you want to support me, the label or the band feel free to spread this artwork and tell everyone that the new AGRYPNIE album offers cold, atmospheric and sometimes raging post black metal and will hit the stores in December. Feel free to post it in forums, blogs, news – everywhere and refer to Supreme Chaos Records (http://www.s-c-r.de). Thank you for the support!

But there are more band news to add. We are about to sign (well actually everything is already fixed) a solo project from a German producer. I was visiting him in his studio and we talked really a lot about music like we always do – and I really enjoy this. But we also talked about the record which will be finished end of the year and will involve some pretty cool guest musicians. He also showed me the first artwork ideas and promo shoots which look amazing. You can expect a progressive mix of calm and extreme music with both, clean vocals and deep growls. Be sure this is not really that modern music but can be compared to some of the works of pioneers who opened death metal to new progressive influences. Very varied though. We have been talking about this project for almost two years now and I am more excited than ever! I will keep you posted on this.

Being cheered up by the latest success of the METAL NIGHTS event series I designed a logo. It is the letters M and N with horns. Check it out on the MN page and tell me if you like it. Maybe we can do some shirts or stickers of it…
The German Metal Hammer has put up a live report including a gallery for the last Metal Night with Dornenreich. Check it out here (German only!).
But there is no time to rest. So I booked new bands, even for 2010 already. November, 7th, we will set up NIGHT OF DOOM where the headliner BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS will be supported by the local doom heroes MIRROR OF DECEPTION (also the organizer of the infamous DOOM SHALL RISE festival – the biggest doom only festival in the world!) and the local Crowbar-like heavy weight DOOM DIVISION. Be sure that I have another surprise waiting for this event…

To something different – yesterday I found out that the new PARADISE LOST album is streamed on their MySpace page at the moment. So after the great video for the title track I gave it a listen and I must admit that this album sounds interesting at last. I will attend the Paradise Lost show in Stuttgart / Röhre for the awesome guys of GHOST BRIGADE in first instance but now I am curious about Paradise Lost as well.

Right now I am listening to KLONE from France like I did yesterday. What a great band. They are recording a new album at the moment. Be sure to check out their last album “All Seeing Eye” – this is something you should not miss! I feel too bad about really remarkable bands being not noticed. This band deserves your attention if you are into progressive rock or metal or if you just want to discover a band that is really different…

I am off to sleep now wracking my brain about when Thunderbird 3 is about to be finished and if it solves IMAP problems… do not forget to vote and comment! Discuss everything, say how you like the music I suggested!

First SoundCloud track review: TOROGDIL – Furchtgewandt

As promised this is the first on-the-fly review in history. TOROGDIL sent me a track entitled “Furchtgewandt” which is home recorded and produced. It is from their upcoming album.
After an epic and heavy guitar intro with a very heavy guitar sound the song starts raging. As expected from the guitar sound it can be described as harsh black metal with a lot of death metal influences. Unfortunately the drums are from a drum machine – I would have loved to hear this song with a real drummer. The vocals are a mixture of whispering and traditional black metal vocals presenting us German vocals. If I was to tell you a similar band I would say DORNENREICH and CREATURE. It is a lot faster and darker than you might expect from DORNENREICH and in a way more epic than you might expect from CREATURE.
The song is quite varied although the same theme is reapeated very often in some parts over a playtime of almost 6:30 minutes. My conclusion is that you can hear very nice songwriting ideas in this demo song and the band is definitively trying to be different from other bands. But as you can expect from a young band this song is not as mature as it should be for a real album release – in my opinion and with my high expectations for new music. BUT I definitively would like to hear this band live and “feel” their sound not as sterile as on this recording – not to mention of a real drummer…

P.S.: You can rate now yourself using the rating feature on the top of the post…

Opeth interview, new music, eBay stress etc.

Short night, new day.

I have posted yesterday that you can send me your tracks for a possible review and had one track in my mailbox immediatly. I will put the review online later that day but I have already listened to it several times. So keep up sending me your music, new suggestions are always welcome and I guess the people out there want to discover new music as well. No limits. Extreme metal, hardrock or even jazz… Everything is welcome!

At the moment we are sorting out bands and we have several bands in our focus which we want to sign to either SUPREME CHAOS RECORDS or PREVISION MUSIC. Be sure – very interesting bands, nice guys and awesome live appearances. I hope we can give you some more informations in the near future – and you can discover some more interesting music.
Also I have booked new artists for the METAL NIGHTS, some good old Swedish friends as well as very old school stuff. But this is already for 2010 and cannot be revealed, yet.

Tomorrow I will be attending a post rock / hardcore / metal concert with the great TEPHRA in Karlsruhe / Sadtmitte. Also on stage: ANTITAINMENT, TOM MESS and TRAGIC VISION. Of course I will put up a live review shortly after I am back home.

You may now be asking – what was about OPETH in the headline? Well I recently found an old interview with Peter / Mikael from OPETH on my harddisc which I did back in December 2005 on the Ghost Reveries tour for Powermetal.de. There are some really interesting questions and answers. I will put up that interview the next day in this blog…

As there was a lot of Swedish death metal in this post today I have to post one track from a very cutting-edge band called EDGE OF SANITY. It has a very catchy chorus with an outstanding vocal line and it actually is a cover version from Dan Swanös “new band” NIGHTINGALE. Check it out here:

This is also a little hint for several activities going on in the back at the moment. Besides of dealing with eBays API insanity. They are changing all the attributes and – BAM – just some months later your eBay integration code does not work anymore. That is where I left my night – thank you eBay …

Listening to Path Of Golconda

I was really exceited about this band listening to their old stuff and wanted to hear what they have been up to lately. A new album is finished and ready to release. I gave “Promo 2009″ a listen and it sounds very familiar. Is that Amon Amarth coming through at some points? Well actually the Germans are more varied and therefor a lot more attractive to me. But the vocals slightly changed from deeper Death Metal growls to higher pitched vocals which  sometimes even build a bridge to Black Metal. I do not know whether this album is really interesting or if it is just “usual” as it seems to be something inbetween. Again, the great guitar solos and lead guitars make the difference – otherwise this album would be very characterless. For all who are into death metal like Amon Amarth – this is for you – check it out!
